The Islands>Santo Antão


The Island of Santo Antão is the 2nd biggest Island in Cape Verde and located in the West side of the archipelago with 779km2 in size with 43km of length and 24km of width. The highest point is “Top d´Coroa with 1979m and a mountainous terrain with over 1500m height. 

The Island was discovered in 1462 but the colonization started only by 1548. 

South and South-East sides are desert and volcanic whereas the North is green with plenty of vegetation and flourished with forests of cypress in the high mountains founds in the Northern latitudes. Plantations of sugar cane, banana, mango and papaya to be found in the lower zones. The national alcoholic beverage known as Grog made out of sugar cane still distilled in the manner it was done hundreds of years ago in larger scale for commercial purposes for local and export markets.
